This simple picture sparked a story from Terry that of his past experiences of volunteering to manage parking at Bellevue during the classic Klondike Days.

"When I was young, I helped my parents park cars at Bellevue. This would have been in the 60s. When the cars arrived, we would hand them a ticket stub, which would indicate they had paid and also allow them to claim the car later. I think prices in the 50s were around 50 cents. If I remember correctly, in the mid-sixties, it was $1.00 and then went up to $2.00. From the mid-70s onwards, they were $5.00. I remember the parking lot was always full every day.

I grew up in Bellevue and lived there for 17 years on 70th Street and 111 Ave, right next to Concordia College. When the freeway came through, we had to move. My father was the Vice President of Bellevue in 1966. I think there used to be hockey photos of me upstairs in the hall, but I'm sure they're long gone by now. I played Mites, Peewee, and bantam hockey for Bellevue.

I live in a small town near Lethbridge now but always like to visit my old neighborhood when I'm there."

Terry has kepts some of tickets and was generous to share a photo of them.

We really appreciate his story. His tale not only shed light on the historical significance of the Bellevue Parking Sign but also served as a touching reminder of the enduring impact our community and our hall has had on indiviudals not just in Edmonton, but across Alberta. It is through these personal narratives and connections to the past that we are able to appreciate the rich tapestry of memories that shape our collective identity and bond us together as a community.

Today Explore Edmonton has taken over our hall and parking lot, providing valuable funds to support our community hall. K-days is an exciting interesting time for a neighbourhoods. Let's look out for one another and we wish everyone a great time as Edmonton and the surrounding areas come together in our community.

electing a new Board. Our Bylaws, which can be found on our Resource page,

describe lots of roles for the Board. The more roles we fill, the more work can

be done by league, making for a great community.

Below I have listed the roles, and they do for the Leage. In addition, there are

number of other volunteer options that we will be look for in the future. Check

them out!

The President:

Supervises the affairs of the Board, chairing meetings of the

Board and is ex officio member of all Committees, Including the Historical

Designation committee which is working to obtain a history designation for our

nearly 75-year-old hall. The president is also the voice of the League and the

Board.

The Vice-President:

The back up for the President when they are away and

will chair meetings when asked. The VP reviews the Bylaws, Policies and

Procedures of the League to make sure they are current and helps ensure

that the board is following those rules. This is a great opportunity for someone

to learn the ropes of the League, if you don’t want to make the important

decisions... at least not yet.

The Secretary:

Comes to all Board meetings and takes exact minutes of these meetings. The

secretary keeps the records for all meetings and makes sure the AGM is

called in the required timeframe The secretary also ensures all legal

documents are completed annually to remain a legal entity.

The Treasurer:

Works with the League’s bookkeeper makes sure all the bills are paid and the

league revenue is collected, while tracking those revenue and expenditures.

Ensures the finances are audited annually and presented to the League at the

AGM

Membership Director:

The membership director is in charge of the membership record, keeping it

safe and accurate. They also make sure all membership fees (when we have

them) are collected.

Program Director: Develops and Oversees programs that meet the needs

of the community. These are ongoing programs for seniors, youth and other

community members that promote community connection and usually

have an element of learning in the process.

Social Director:

Develops and oversees events. These are short term or sporadic events, that

get the community together to share company, such as Pub Nights,

Potlucks and BBQs.

Sports Director:

Develops and oversees a separate sports Program. Usually these are youth

programs and could include, like soccer or softball/baseball.

Civics Director:

Talks with City departments such as Planning and Development;

Transportation, and City Council. Current topics may include District Planning,

water treatment plant redevelopment. This would be a great role for someone

that wants to keep on top of the Northlands redevelopment.

Community Safety Director:

Talks with the Edmonton Police and other safety organizations. Brings safety

programs to the community. Some communities work with Neighbourhood

Watch or Vision Zero to bring a greater sense of safety to the community.

Communications Director: Makes sure our community knows what’s going

on with the League, as well as what is happening in the, neighbouring

communities, and in the City that may affect them. Keeps up the Social Media

Posts, the website and sends out regular digital Newsletters.

There is more!

The Community League is looking to hear from community members that just

want to volunteer.

Some options are:

Help on a Committee or Team (they’re pretty informal). This could be the

Historical Resource Designation team or the Christmas Potluck team or the

BBQ team.

Host an Event: A Pub Night or a Watch Party, or something else. Frequent events need need hosts to keep them going and keep them popular.

Run a Program: You don’t have to be director to run a program. If you have

an idea to bring community together on a regular basis and think you know

exactly how to do that, give us a shout.

Volunteer Coor Cooridnator: A lot of our work needs volunteers, even for just a

day. Help us recruit, track, and reward our volunteers, for their great efforts.

We need one-day event volunteers to help us bring our community together to celebrate another years as one of the oldest leagues (104 years) in Edmonton. Signup Today

Grill Master: 4:30pm-5 :30pm

We need someone to start the burgers and dogs. We need your amazing grilling skills to make amazing moist food for hungry neighbours.

Craft Supervisor/Guide: 6:30 pm-8:00pm

Entertain the kids while grown-ups talk and talk during our AGM. You can bring your own crafty ideas or just guide the chaos of the craft room.

Event Set Up: 4:00pm-5:00pm

Help the directors get ready for our community event. Setting up a bouncy castle, the BBQ station, and the crafting room. Then hang out with your community as you enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Breakdown: 8:00-8:30pm

The volunteers that help us will be much appreciated as we put everything away so we can get home and to our cozy beds.

We thank all our volunteers. It is because of you that we can build strong community.

Anybody who has hosted an event at the Bellevue Community League Hall knows that it is one of Edmonton’s best kept secret venues. Between the expansive main hall and the comfortable retro vibes of the upstairs Centennial Room, our facility is a wonderful option for your upcoming events and parties. Those curious about league matters past and present will be able to stay up to speed easily through the new website. In addition to meeting minutes and AGM packages, our new Resources page collects historical documents and images for the enjoyment of community members. Community Amenities

This is one feature that we’re especially excited about! Our new website aims to be a valuable resource for residents and those interested in our community. As such, we’re aiming to profile nearby amenities available in Bellevue, Virginia Park, and the surrounding areas. Everything from schools and recreation facilities to playgrounds and green spaces will be on display! Head to the Community Amenities page to dive in!

Food, fun, community, and holiday cheer come together December 16th for the Bellevue-Highlands Holiday Potluck.

We need volunteers to make this event an success. From set up to cleanup, and from the kitchen to the kid’s table.

Santa is also needed for the kids. If you know Santa personally, we would greatly appreciate his presence. We even have a suit available so that Santa can leave his at the North Pole for the “big night”.
